JOY WORLD HOME FOR GIRLS

Rescue, Restore, Empower

Joy World’s co-founder, Purity Mwenda-Tharp

Based in Meru, Kenya, Joy World provides a refuge for more than 80 girls (aged 4 to 18+) coming from the most traumatic circumstances imaginable. These girls have been abandoned by their parents, made homeless, kept from school, and forced to take desperate measures in order to survive. Though many have been referred to Joy World by local government agencies and churches, no organization in the region is equipped to provide them with the long-term support they need.

Since its founding in 2011, Joy World has rescued and educated over 700 girls. At Joy World, girls find a safe and loving home where their physical and emotional health are restored through the dedicated attention of the staff, a sisterhood of supportive peers, secure dormitories, and healthy meals.

Through the leadership of co-founder Purity Mwenda-Tharp and her staff, Joy World girls are empowered to be the agents of their own transformation. Many are heads of their classes with most scoring above the mean on national exams. Several have become role models and leaders in their
communities and won scholarships to study nursing, teaching, nutrition and other vocations at Kenyan universities and training institutions.

Linet’s Story…

Linet Ncatha and her two siblings found themselves homeless at a young age when their mother was arrested and their grandparents were unable to take them in. Only 11 years old, Linet took a job as a house girl to support herself and her siblings, but this prevented her from attending school and put her at risk of abuse.

Linet God answered my prayers. Purity and her husband [Lawrence] took pity on me … [and] were also willing to take care of my two siblings. This is how I found myself at Joy World. They gave me hope. When I grow up, I would like to be a pilot, study abroad, … help my community [and] take care of the vulnerable in society.

OUR CURRENT CHALLENGE

Rescue, Restore, Empower

Despite our unwavering commitment, Joy World currently navigates a tempestuous period. The untimely passing of our late co-founder, Dr. Lawrence Tharp, coupled with the unexpected closure of a key US-based NGO contributor, has left us in an urgent need for financial assistance.

To preserve the home these girls have come to know and ensure that they do not face homelessness again, we humbly request your support. Every contribution, regardless of its size, will be directed towards our operational expenses, including utilities, food, clothing, and staff salaries.
