Dr. Irungu Kang’ata is the current Governor of Murang’a County. He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and the Managing Partner of Irungu Kang’ata & Co Advocates. He is a member of the Law Society of Kenya. He specializes in Legal consultancy services, Conveyance, Commercial Law, Litigation and Labour Law.
Sen. Irungu Kang’ata started his sojourn in leadership in the year 1999 in the University of Nairobi. He was elected Vice Chair of Kenya Law Students Society and later in the same year elected the Vice Chairman of SONU which was the umbrella students union. His human rights crusade and student activism saw him suspended indefinitely in the year 2000.
During the suspension period, he vied for councilor in the year 2002 in the then Central Ward, Murang’a Municipality and won. He did not defend the position in 2007 but chose to pursue his professional growth. He vied for the Kiharu Constituency parliamentary seat and won in the year 2013. In the year 2017, he vied for senate and won and on 8th of August 2022 won Murang’a county gubernatorial seat.
He graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree in the year 2005 and was admitted to the bar in the year 2007. After serving employment stints in various law firms, he was employed as a state counsel in the Attorney General’s chambers in 2009. He left soon thereafter to establish his own law firm. He earned a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree from the University of Nairobi in the year 2015 and later graduated with a PhD in the same university.

In the 11th parliament, Irungu Kang’ata was awarded by Mzalendo Trust for championing Education related legislation in parliament after his higher Education amendment bill that was signed into law by the president. In 2015, Irungu Kang’ata was awarded for best management of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and investing heavily in domestic water projects by the Central Kenya Forum for Peace after his CDF kitty management was recognized as the best Within Mount Kenya region.
Dr. Irungu Kang’ata is a family man, married to Mary Wambui and they have four Children.
